The Center for Community-Engaged Media (CCEM), established in 2024, supports journalism, media, and civic information systems that center communities and encourage dialogue, and care.

The center's initiatives include engaged research, collaborative projects and educational and training offerings that serve the information needs of communities and develop the connecting and convening potential of journalism.

CCEM builds on Klein faculty members’ efforts to develop community journalism that tells stories not only about but also for and with communities. This work has led to the development of now independent community-centered projects like the Germantown Info Hub and Kensington Voice. It also works to support the development of community-led initiatives such as the Philly-Afghan Info Hub and DayOneNotDayTwo’s Community AF project.

The center will continue to collaborate with community and media stakeholders on research and project development, and to share lessons learned through a range of public forums.

Students reporting

We created the center to provide an infrastructure to sustain and build on the work Klein College has been doing to encourage better relationships between journalism and communities. Having a center gives us a structure that we hope will allow such efforts to be more sustainable.
